Nobody hacked your account. Your password still works, your posts are still there, your followers are still yours. And yet, somewhere in India this morning, a friend of yours is reading a message from a profile with your face, your name and your bio, asking for five thousand rupees for an emergency. That is social media account cloning India 2026 in one sentence, and it is the reason this scam is so hard to fight. There is nothing to recover, because nothing was taken from you. It was taken from the people who trust you.
Cyberabad Police issued a public advisory in January 2026 about exactly this, warning that fraudsters were building counterfeit profiles on Facebook, X, Instagram and WhatsApp by copying the names and photographs of police officers, bankers and government officials, and then using those profiles to ask contacts for urgent money transfers. The advisory noted the classic escalation: a small transfer first to establish that you are real, then a larger one for legal fees or a family emergency.
The uncomfortable part is that identity theft social media India at this level requires no technical skill whatsoever. Everything a cloner needs, your photo, your name, your bio, your job, your city, and above all your friends list, is already public on your profile. This guide covers the four ways it is done in India, the real cases on police record, the three minute self check that tells you if it has already happened, and the exact reporting sequence that gets a cloned account taken down. It sits alongside our wider social media scam guide, which covers the frauds that run on platforms you do not own an account on.
If you just found a clone of your account
- 1Screenshot the fake profile, its URL and every message it sent, before you report it
- 2Post a public warning on your own real account right now, story and pinned post both
- 3Report the clone on the platform under pretending to be someone, not under spam
- 4File at cybercrime.gov.in under Impersonation and save the acknowledgement number
- 5Call 1930 the same hour if any contact of yours has already transferred money
- 6Do not message the impostor. Anything you say gets edited and reused on your contacts
What Is Social Media Account Cloning, and Why It Is Surging in 2026
Account cloning is the creation of a duplicate profile that copies your public identity in order to defraud the people who know you. The clone is a separate account. It has its own login, its own email, its own phone number. Your account is untouched, which is precisely why most victims discover the fraud only when a friend calls to ask why you needed money so urgently.
It is worth separating three things that get lumped together in Indian news reports, because the fix for each is completely different.
- Cloning is a copy. A new account wearing your face. Nothing of yours was breached, and changing your password does nothing.
- Takeover is theft of the real account, usually through a phishing page, a forwarded OTP or a SIM swap. Here password resets, session revocation and account recovery are the whole answer.
- Impersonation is the broader offence that covers both, and it is what you actually file under at cybercrime.gov.in and on the platforms.
Three things pushed this from nuisance to serious financial crime in India. The first is that public profiles are now genuinely rich. A single Instagram or LinkedIn page gives a scammer your photograph, your employer, your city, your recent travel, your family members tagged by name and, crucially, a browsable list of the exact people who would believe a message from you.
The second is that generative AI removed the last friction. A cloner no longer has to write convincingly in your voice. Feed a model twenty of your public captions and it will produce a message that sounds like you, in your mix of English and Hindi, with your punctuation habits. When that is paired with a cloned voice note, which our AI voice cloning guide covers in detail, the request stops feeling like a text and starts feeling like a phone call from a friend.
The third is enforcement lag. When Uttar Pradesh Police tried to get a fake Facebook ID impersonating the Superintendent of Police of Balrampur removed in 2025, they sent removal requests to the platform grievance cell on three consecutive days, contacted the grievance officer twice, received no response, and eventually registered an FIR naming Facebook itself. If a police force with an official channel takes that long, an individual filing a report from a phone is not going to get a fast result by waiting quietly.
The 4 Types of Account Cloning Attacks in India
The mechanism differs by platform, and so does the target. On Instagram and Facebook the target is your friends. On WhatsApp it is your contacts. On LinkedIn it is your employer and your clients. On YouTube it is your audience.

Type 1: Instagram and Facebook Profile Cloning
This is the volume attack, and the one behind most Facebook profile cloning scam India complaints. The scammer creates a new account, copies your display picture and bio verbatim, and takes a username one character away from yours. An added underscore. A doubled letter. A lowercase l swapped for a capital I, which are visually identical in most app fonts. They reupload a handful of your public photos so the grid does not look empty, then work down your public friends list sending requests.
The first few acceptances do the heavy lifting. Once three or four mutual friends show up on the fake profile, every subsequent person sees a familiar account with mutual connections and accepts without thinking. Then the direct messages begin, and they are always small, urgent and emotionally reasonable. Stuck somewhere. Phone not working. Need five thousand, will return tomorrow.
The Indian variant that police report most often targets people whose authority makes the request harder to question. Cyber criminals created a fake Facebook profile of the Inspector General of Police in Bareilly and messaged his acquaintances asking for money. In Bengaluru, a conman created a fake Facebook account in the name of a police inspector and took twenty thousand rupees from one of his friends, with the fraud surfacing only when the same friend was about to send another eighty thousand. Fraudsters built a fake Instagram account in the name of the Governor of Himachal Pradesh and used it to solicit money. In each case the impersonated person lost nothing. Their contacts did.
Type 2: WhatsApp Cloning and OTP Takeover
Two distinct attacks share the name WhatsApp account cloned India, and confusing them wastes the hours that matter.
The real takeover runs on the six digit registration code. A scammer begins a WhatsApp registration on your number. WhatsApp dutifully sends the code to your phone. Then a message arrives, often from an account already showing a friend name and photo, saying a code was sent to you by mistake and could you please forward it. The moment you do, your account moves to their device and you are logged out. In one documented Pune case, a 32 year old forwarded the code, the scammer immediately messaged her contacts asking for emergency loans of three thousand to fifteen thousand rupees, and by the time her brother reached her on a landline, forty seven thousand rupees had left her family circle. In Bengaluru, cyber criminals took over the WhatsApp account of former minister R Roshan Baig and began messaging his contacts for money and sending links, and the East CEN police registered an FIR.
The far more common version is not a takeover at all. The scammer opens a brand new WhatsApp account on their own number, sets your photo as the display picture and your name as the profile name, and starts messaging your contacts. Nothing of yours was breached. There is no account to recover. Your only defence is speed of warning, because the display picture is doing all the work. Our WhatsApp scam guide covers the wider family of message based fraud.
One protective step covers both: turn on WhatsApp two step verification under Settings, then Account, then Two step verification. With a PIN set, a stolen OTP alone is no longer enough to move your account anywhere.
Type 3: LinkedIn Profile Cloning for Business Fraud
LinkedIn cloning is the quiet, expensive one, because it targets money that moves in lakhs rather than thousands. Two shapes dominate in India. In the first, a fake recruiter profile borrows a real employee identity at a real company, sometimes lifting an actual open role and an actual profile link to look verifiable, then asks candidates for a deposit against equipment, training, uniform or medical coverage. Between January and March 2026, cyber cells in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi NCR logged 3,847 complaints involving fake LinkedIn recruiters, a reported 340 percent jump on 2025. Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys now both run permanent recruitment fraud alert pages for precisely this reason.
In the second shape, the cloned identity is a senior executive rather than a recruiter, and the target is the finance function. SEBI issued a warning in July 2026 to listed companies and regulated entities about the Boss Scam, in which fraudsters impersonate CEOs and managing directors over WhatsApp, email and social media to push finance executives into transferring funds, and advised that no payment instruction arriving through a social platform should be acted on without a direct call to the executive. The pattern is not theoretical. In Ludhiana, a scammer contacted a businessman's accountant on WhatsApp claiming to be the company director and had 86 lakh rupees transferred. Our boss scam guide covers the payment authorisation controls that stop it, and our job scam guide covers the recruitment side.
Type 4: YouTube and X Channel Cloning for Investment Scams
Here the asset being stolen is an audience. A channel is hijacked, usually through a phishing email carrying malware that lifts session cookies and tokens, which is why two factor authentication alone does not always stop it, then rebranded to impersonate a company or a public figure and used to livestream a fake crypto giveaway. In September 2024, Indian creator Ranveer Allahbadia had multiple YouTube channels hijacked and rebranded to mimic Tesla, running an AI altered video of Elon Musk pushing a double your crypto scheme to an audience built over years. Across the wider campaign, more than 35 channels livestreamed AI generated Musk content simultaneously.
The same playbook has moved to X in India. ThePrint documented a wave of takeovers through 2026 hitting the accounts of former High Commissioner Navtej Sarna, journalist Tavleen Singh and retired IAS officer K.B.S. Sidhu, with hijacked accounts posting fake crypto endorsement stories tagging a supposed trading coach. The methods reported were phishing pages, SIM swapping and session token theft. Security researchers quoted in that report were blunt about the fix: move off SMS based two factor authentication to an authenticator app, a hardware key or a passkey, because SMS falls to SIM swap. Our SIM swap guide explains how that attack works in India.
How Scammers Use a Cloned Account Against Your Contacts
The cloned profile is never the fraud. It is the credential that makes the fraud work. What follows is a short, well rehearsed sequence, and it is worth reading as the person on the receiving end rather than as the person being impersonated.
The sequence, step by step
Copy, connect, isolate, extract
- Step 1
- Copy the public identity, photo, bio, username, recent posts
- Step 2
- Send requests to the friends list on the real profile
- Step 3
- Early acceptances create mutual friends and social proof
- Step 4
- Move to direct message, never to a public comment
- Step 5
- Small emotionally reasonable ask, usually Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000
- Step 6
- Urgency plus an excuse for why you cannot be called
Notice step six, because it is the load bearing one. Every version of this scam contains a reason why the contact cannot simply ring you and check. The phone is damaged. The number is temporarily out of service. The person is abroad and on roaming. That single sentence is the entire fraud, because the verification it blocks takes ten seconds and would end everything.
The amounts are deliberately small. Three thousand, five thousand, fifteen thousand. Small enough that a friend transfers without a second thought, small enough that many victims never report it, and multiplied across forty contacts it is a serious day's work. In the Bengaluru police inspector case, the first transfer was twenty thousand rupees and the second, stopped only by chance, would have been eighty thousand.
There is a second harvest most people miss. A cloned account is not only a payment request, it is a data collection tool. Your contacts, believing they are talking to you, will confirm their own phone numbers, describe where they work, mention which bank they use and click links they would never open from a stranger. Cyberabad Police specifically warned against sharing OTPs, CVVs, bank details and Aadhaar credentials in response to messages from such profiles, and against clicking links in unsolicited urgent messages.
How to Detect If Your Account Has Been Cloned
How to check if your social media account has been cloned in India
- 1Search your own full name on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, and look for duplicate profiles
- 2Ask trusted friends whether they received any messages from you that you did not send
- 3Check whether anyone has posted or commented on your behalf without your knowledge
- 4Watch for friend or follow requests going out from your account that you did not send
- 5Set up a Google Alert for your own name at google.com/alerts so new results reach you first
- 6On Instagram, open Settings, then Security, then Login Activity, and check for unknown devices
- 7Turn on two step verification on WhatsApp under Settings, then Account, then Two step verification
If a cloned profile is found, report it immediately on the platform and warn all your contacts in the same hour.

Two of those steps deserve expanding, because people do them badly.
Search while logged out. Your logged in search results are personalised and will hide accounts you have blocked or that have blocked you, and a cloner very often blocks the person they are copying so the clone never appears in that person's feed. Open a private browsing window, search your name on each platform, and look at the raw results. This is the single fastest answer to someone is using my photos India scam, and it takes under a minute per platform.
Ask three people from three different circles. One family member, one colleague, one friend from outside both. Cloners typically work through one segment of a friends list at a time, so asking three people from the same WhatsApp group can return three clean answers while forty other contacts are already being messaged.
One clarification that saves a lot of wasted effort. If you can still log in normally and nothing about your account has changed, it is a clone, and changing your password accomplishes nothing at all, because your password was never part of the attack. If Login Activity shows unfamiliar devices or your registered email has changed, that is a takeover, and account recovery plus session revocation is the correct response.
How to Protect Your Account From Being Cloned
You cannot make cloning impossible, because anything a stranger can see, a stranger can copy. What you can do is remove the raw material and make yourself a slower target than the next profile, which matters because this crime runs at volume.
- Hide your friends and connections list. This is the highest value single setting and almost nobody changes it. On Facebook, Settings, then Privacy, then Who can see your friends list, set to Only me. On LinkedIn, set your connections to visible only to you. Your contact list is the target list. Remove it and the clone has a face but nowhere to point it.
- Set Instagram to private and turn off similar account suggestions. Settings, then Account Privacy for the first. Settings, then Privacy, then Similar Account Suggestions for the second, which stops your profile being served to strangers who followed accounts like yours.
- Restrict your WhatsApp profile photo to My contacts. Settings, then Privacy, then Profile photo. The display picture is the single asset that makes WhatsApp impersonation work, and a stranger who cannot see it cannot wear it.
- Use an authenticator app or passkey, not SMS. SMS based two factor authentication falls to SIM swap, which is exactly how several of the Indian account takeovers documented in 2026 were carried out.
- Turn on WhatsApp two step verification. A registration PIN means a stolen OTP alone can never move your account to another device.
- Watermark nothing, but post less that identifies people. Tagged family photos, your workplace, your travel dates and your children's school are the details that make a clone's message convincing to the people who matter to you.
- Agree a family code word. One word, agreed offline, never sent in a message. Any request for money from any account claiming to be you gets answered with a request for that word. This costs nothing and defeats every version of this fraud including cloned voice notes.
- Get verified if the platform allows it. Cyberabad Police explicitly advised trusting only accounts with a confirmed verification badge, and calling the person on a number you already have rather than any number supplied inside the message.
For business accounts, add one control that has nothing to do with social media: no payment instruction that arrives on a social platform gets executed without a call back to the executive on a number already in your records. That is the exact control SEBI advised listed companies to adopt, and it is the only thing that stops a cloned executive identity from becoming a wire transfer. Our business verification guide covers the wider check.
What To Do If Your Account Has Already Been Cloned
Order matters here, and the first step is the one people skip in panic.

1. Screenshot before you report. Capture the fake profile page, the profile URL, the numeric profile ID, the posts, and every message it has sent to anyone who will forward them to you. The account can vanish the moment it is reported, and your evidence vanishes with it. Take the screenshots on both phone and desktop, because the desktop version shows the full URL.
2. Warn your own contacts before you do anything else. A pinned post and a story on your real account, plus a message to any WhatsApp group where your contacts overlap. This is faster than any platform process and it is the step that actually prevents losses. Say plainly that a fake account is messaging people in your name and that you will never ask for money over a message.
3. Report it on the platform as impersonation, not as spam. This is the part that answers how to report cloned account India properly. On Instagram, open the fake profile, tap the three dots, choose Report, then It is pretending to be someone, then Me. On Facebook, open the fake profile, three dots, Report profile, Fake account, then Me. On LinkedIn, open the profile, More, Report or Block, then Pretending to be someone. Choosing the impersonation route rather than spam is what engages Rule 3(2)(b) of the IT Rules 2021, under which the platform must remove impersonation content within 24 hours of receiving the complaint.
4. File at cybercrime.gov.in. Choose Report Other Cybercrime, then Social Media Crime, then Impersonation. Save the acknowledgement number, because quoting it in your notice to the platform grievance officer changes how the complaint is handled. You do not need to have lost money to file this.
5. Call 1930 if any contact has already paid. The helpline can request a lien on the beneficiary account while the money is still in it. That is a window of minutes, not days. Tell the person who paid to call 1930 themselves as well, since they are the account holder whose transfer needs freezing. Our money recovery guide sets out that first hour in detail.
6. File an FIR at the cyber cell if money moved or threats were made. The sections to cite are IT Act Section 66C for identity theft, IT Act Section 66D for cheating by personation, and BNS Section 318(4) where money was dishonestly obtained. That is the exact combination used in the registered Balrampur case over a fake Facebook ID impersonating a Superintendent of Police. Our victim rights guide covers what police and banks are obliged to do once you file.
7. Escalate if the platform does nothing. If the impersonation content is still up after 24 hours, appeal to the Grievance Appellate Committee at gac.gov.in within 30 days. Given that a state police force went three days without a response from a platform grievance cell before registering an FIR, plan on escalating rather than waiting.
And one thing not to do, which is worth repeating because the instinct is strong: do not message the impostor. Every reply you send can be screenshotted, cropped, edited and shown to your own contacts as proof that the fake account is the real you.
What Indian Law Actually Gives You
Many people assume a cloned profile is a platform problem rather than a crime. It is a crime, on several counts, and you can file without having lost a rupee yourself.
The sections that apply
Cloning is a criminal offence in India
- IT Act 66C
- Identity theft, up to 3 years and Rs 1 lakh fine
- IT Act 66D
- Cheating by personation using a computer resource, up to 3 years
- BNS 319
- Cheating by personation
- BNS 318(4)
- Cheating where property is dishonestly obtained, up to 7 years
- IT Rules 3(2)(b)
- Platform must remove impersonation content in 24 hours
- Appeal route
- Grievance Appellate Committee at gac.gov.in, within 30 days
The 24 hour obligation under Rule 3(2)(b) is the piece most victims never invoke, and it is the most useful one. The rule covers content that is prima facie in the nature of impersonation, including artificially morphed images, and it requires the intermediary to take all reasonable measures to remove or disable access within 24 hours of receiving the complaint. A grievance officer must acknowledge within 24 hours and dispose of the complaint within 15 days. Writing to the platform grievance officer citing Rule 3(2)(b) and quoting your cybercrime.gov.in acknowledgement number is a materially different act from tapping report in the app, and it is what creates the paper trail your appeal will need.
30 Second Instagram Reel Script
Format: hook on the split screen fake profile, cut through the four platforms, land on the self search, close on the code word. Shoot vertical 9:16, burn in Hindi and English captions for sound off viewers.
On-screen caption: A cloned account is not a hack. Nothing of yours is stolen, your friends are the ones who pay. Search your own name on every platform tonight. If money has already moved, call 1930 in the first hour and file at cybercrime.gov.in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Someone created a fake profile using my photos in India. What should I do?
Do four things in this order, and do them in the first thirty minutes. First, screenshot everything, the fake profile, its URL, its numeric profile ID and any messages it has sent, because the account can be deleted the moment it is reported and your evidence disappears with it. Second, post a public warning on your own real account so your followers see it before the clone reaches them. Third, report the fake profile on the platform itself under the pretending to be someone option, which is the route that triggers the 24 hour removal obligation under Rule 3(2)(b) of the IT Rules 2021. Fourth, file at cybercrime.gov.in under Report Other Cybercrime, then Social Media Crime, then Impersonation, and keep the acknowledgement number. If the clone has already taken money from anyone, call 1930 the same hour and go to your local cyber cell for an FIR under IT Act Section 66D and BNS Section 318(4). One thing not to do: do not message the impostor. Anything you say can be screenshotted, edited and reused on your own contacts.
How do scammers clone a WhatsApp account in India?
There are two different things people call WhatsApp cloning and only one of them is a real takeover. The genuine takeover is OTP theft. A scammer starts a WhatsApp registration on your number, WhatsApp sends the six digit code to your phone, and then someone posing as a friend, a delivery agent or a support executive asks you to forward the code that was sent by mistake. The moment you send it, your account moves to their device and your contacts start getting messages from your own number. The second, far more common version is not cloning at all, it is impersonation. The scammer opens a brand new WhatsApp account on their own number, sets your photo as the display picture, sets your name, and messages your contacts as you. Nothing was hacked, and there is nothing to recover, because they never touched your account. The damage to your contacts is identical either way, so the response is the same: warn everyone immediately through a channel the scammer does not control, and turn on WhatsApp two step verification so an OTP alone is never enough.
Can someone clone my Instagram account without hacking it?
Yes, and this is the part most people get wrong. Cloning needs no hacking, no password, no OTP and no malware. A scammer opens a new Instagram account, takes a username one character different from yours, usually an added underscore, a doubled letter or a swapped l for a capital I, saves your profile photo, copies your bio word for word, downloads a handful of your public posts and reuploads them, then sends follow requests to the followers listed on your real profile. Early acceptances create social proof, and later requests get accepted because your other friends are already showing as followers. Then the direct messages start. Everything the scammer used was public. This is exactly why a private account is not vanity, it is the single most effective control you have.
How do I lock my social media profile to prevent cloning in India?
On Instagram, go to Settings, then Account Privacy, and set the account to Private, then go to Settings, then Privacy, then Similar Account Suggestions and turn it off so your profile stops being served to strangers. On Facebook, open Settings, then Privacy, set future posts and past posts to Friends, turn off Allow others to share your posts, and critically set Who can see your friends list to Only me, because your friends list is the target list a cloner needs. On LinkedIn, open Settings, then Visibility, and turn off Profile visibility off LinkedIn, and set your connections list to visible only to you. On WhatsApp, open Settings, then Privacy, and set Profile photo to My contacts, which removes the single asset used in almost every WhatsApp impersonation. None of this makes cloning impossible. It makes you a slower target than the next person, and scammers work at volume.
What legal action can I take against someone who cloned my social media in India?
Cloning your profile is a criminal offence in India on at least two counts, and you do not need to have lost money to file. Under the Information Technology Act, Section 66C covers identity theft with imprisonment up to three years and a fine up to one lakh rupees, and Section 66D covers cheating by personation using a computer resource with the same maximum. Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Section 319 covers cheating by personation and Section 318(4) covers cheating where money or property is dishonestly obtained, which carries up to seven years. Uttar Pradesh Police have used exactly this combination, BNS 318(4) with IT Act Sections 66C and 66D, in a registered case over a fake Facebook ID impersonating a Superintendent of Police. Separately from the criminal route, Rule 3(2)(b) of the IT Rules 2021 obliges the platform to remove impersonation content within 24 hours of your complaint, and if it does not, you can appeal to the Grievance Appellate Committee at gac.gov.in within 30 days.
How do I know if it is my account that was hacked or just a copy of it?
Check whether you can still log in. If you can log in normally and your posts and followers are untouched, it is a clone, a separate account that merely looks like yours, and no password change will help because your password was never involved. If you are locked out, or Instagram shows unfamiliar devices under Settings, then Security, then Login Activity, or your email address or phone number on the account has been changed without you doing it, that is a takeover and you should run the platform account recovery flow immediately and revoke every active session. The distinction matters because the fixes are opposite. A takeover is fixed with password resets, two factor authentication and session revocation. A clone is fixed with reporting, publicity to your own contacts, and an impersonation complaint, because there is nothing of yours to secure.
