Fake UPI Screenshot Scam
Buyers send edited PhonePe and GPay screenshots claiming they paid — but no money was ever sent. Common in OLX, Facebook Marketplace, and rental transactions.
How to Verify a UPI Payment
- 1
Open Your Bank App
Log in to your bank's official app (SBI YONO, HDFC, ICICI iMobile) — not a UPI app.
- 2
Check Transaction History
Look for a credit entry matching the exact amount. The transaction should show the sender's UPI ID.
- 3
Verify the Amount and Sender
Confirm the credited amount matches what was agreed. Confirm the sender name/UPI ID matches the buyer.
- 4
Cross-Check in UPI App
Open PhonePe, GPay, or Paytm and confirm the transaction appears in your received payments history.
- 5
Only Then Release Goods
After bank confirmation, release the item. Do not rely on screenshots, verbal confirmation, or urgency from the buyer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I verify a UPI payment is real without relying on a screenshot?
Check your bank account directly: (1) Open your bank's official app and check the transaction history — a real payment will show as a credit. (2) Check your UPI app (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm) transaction history. (3) Wait for an SMS from your bank confirming the credit. Never rely on a screenshot — check your actual account balance. Release goods only after confirming the credit in your own bank records.
Can UPI payment screenshots be forged easily?
Yes — free screenshot editing apps and websites allow anyone to change amounts, names, transaction IDs, and status on UPI screenshots in minutes. Scammers also share screenshots of real successful transactions to third parties (not the seller). Screenshots are not proof of payment.
What are the signs that a UPI screenshot is fake?
Signs of a forged screenshot: (1) The timestamp shows odd formatting or timezone. (2) The amount or name text looks slightly different from the surrounding text. (3) The transaction ID format is wrong (real IDs are 12 digits for NPCI). (4) The sender name matches exactly what they told you — scammers often just show you your own name in the "received from" field. (5) They send the screenshot before you check your bank.
What should I do if I released goods based on a fake UPI screenshot?
Report immediately: (1) Call 1930 — the national cybercrime helpline. (2) File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in with the screenshot and the buyer's phone number/UPI ID. (3) Report the UPI ID to your UPI app provider. (4) If the goods were high value, file an FIR with your local police — cybercrime cases under ₹1 lakh are increasingly being resolved by police.
